Period

2024-2025

Over three decades, Wajjo’s journey has unfolded like a drum rhythm with each beat building upon the last, each decade revealing a deeper layer of purpose, passion, and legacy. Through the leadership of Kamara What began as a small gathering of artists determined to make African, Caribbean, and Black (ACB) cultural expressions visible in Alberta has become a powerful movement that continues to inspire generations.

The First Decade (1992–2002): The Birth of a Voice
Wajjo’s early years were defined by courage and community spirit. Emerging at a time when African and Caribbean arts had little visibility in Alberta, the group became a cultural beacon—performing in schools, community centers, and festivals to introduce audiences to the power of drumming, dance, and storytelling. This period laid the foundation for cultural reclamation, proving that rhythm and tradition could thrive even far from home. Wajjo’s founders and early members were more than performers; they were cultural ambassadors, carrying the sounds and stories of their ancestors into new spaces.

The Second Decade (2003–2013): Building Bridges and Belonging
As Wajjo grew, so did its vision. The second decade marked a time of expansion and education—training young artists, forming partnerships, and mentoring the next generation. Wajjo became a trusted platform where heritage met innovation, blending traditional rhythms with contemporary performance styles. Workshops and collaborations across Edmonton and beyond deepened the organization’s roots, helping to bridge generations and connect cultures. This era transformed Wajjo from a community troupe into a cultural institution recognized for its artistic excellence and social impact.

The Third Decade (2014–Present): Legacy and Leadership
In its most recent chapter, Wajjo has stepped into its role as a legacy builder. The group’s performances have evolved into living archives of ACB creativity, and its training programs have empowered hundreds of youth to carry forward their cultural knowledge with pride and purpose.
Through initiatives like The Legacy Project, Wajjo is documenting its story, celebrating its alumni, and creating pathways for future generations of artists, scholars, and community leaders. Today, Wajjo stands as a symbol of resilience and renewal, proving that when a community invests in its culture, it creates a legacy that dances through time.
